Impolite auto drivers in Chennai roads-Is there a panacea?

The auto drivers in and around Chennai city are increasingly becoming cruel .The auto rides are proving to be totally unsafe for women in the city. In the past few days a whopping three cases have been reported on auto drivers from different parts of the city. The most appalling one being the case of an auto-driver who is reported to have slippered a journalist. On that fateful day, the journalist has traveled along with her colleague in an auto. The women are said to have got into an argument with the auto driver when he drove past their destination. The furious auto driver got off his auto and slippered the journalist several times. He also refused to heed to the plea of the journalist's colleague who accompanied her. All this has happened in a broad daylight but no one came for the rescue of the women. The public remained as mere spectators to their horror. In another case, an auto driver is said to have pushed an elderly woman from the auto after looting her jewels. In another case, an auto driver looted about two lakh from a woman. All these incidents vouch for the fact that arrogant and cruel auto drivers are on the prowl. The Chennai auto drivers are already blamed for charging exorbidant fares from the public. With regard to this issue, the Times Of India had recently published an article that concludes saying that the Chennai auto drivers are very unruly when compared to their other metro counter parts(the article also included vox populi ).In cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore,Delhi and Hyderabad, the auto drivers are much polite and charge reasonably. In most of these cities, auto drivers use meters and collect only the price shown in the meter.Its high time for the authorities to bring some regulation and take severe action against the arrogant auto drivers.
