In Chennai, the rainy season is generally marked by prolonged power-cuts, water-clogged roads, chaotic traffic, and viral infections. If the rain hits the city, it stumbles and turns topsy-turvy. Of course, power-cuts and traffic have become almost order of the day( even during non-rainy seasons). Then, the state government's decision to extend the present power cut schedule from one and half hours to four hours came as a shock to the Chennaites. The situation may be even more worse in towns and villages of Tamil Nadu because the state government had announced a ten hour scheduled power cuts.It was announced that the new power cut schedule comes into effect from November 1st.Apart from revising the schedule, the state government had also decided to charge 50% more if the power consumption exceeds 600 units. The charge was expected to be 70% more for the commercial complexes. But luckily, the opposition parties interfered and criticized the decision of the state government strongly. Consequently, the government's withdrawal of the revised power cut charge came as a sweet diwali surprise for Tamilians.
Even a year back, we didn't experience frequent power cuts in TN. It is only of late, the power cut has taken a toll in the lives of people of Tamil Nadu.If the State government fail to plan for a permanent fix, the production across various industries is going to dip.Remember, industries can no longer rely on generators because of the soaring diesel costs.Hope our government realize that an alternative plan to the power cut is the need of the hour.
Another nagging problem that Chennaites experience during rainy season is water clogging. It takes one hour to reach a destination during the rainy season that will usually take only twenty minutes. The concerned authorities should spare a thought and do something about the Chennai roads that are in a very bad state. One classic example for the life in Chennai during rainy season could be the last Friday evening. Many of my colleagues had stories of how difficult it was to reach their respective destinations on Friday evening due to the unprecedented rain.In fact, it was rainy heavily only for few hours. But, that was enough to leave the city stumbled. Many office goers reached home only late night. Moreover, the DMK's human chain added fuel to the fire. Many people couldn't find any autos or buses to their homes and others got strangled in the traffic on Friday evening.Another problem that makes the rainy season the worst thing in Chennai is the mosquitoes and the resultant viral infections. If the corporation can take necessary measures to curb these problems that form as the flip side of Chennai, the city is sure to be a paradise in the earth.
